This documentary delves into the remarkable journey of Talon, an industry leader who has partnered with the University of Southern Queensland , as they revolutionise recycling practices and redefine sustainability standards. Through insightful interviews, we’ve unraveled Talon's origins, their groundbreaking approach to plastic waste management, and their commitment to environmental education.
The Brief
When Geoff and Sam approached Spicy Tiger about wanting to create a documentary that highlighted their venture, we were excited to jump on board. The state of the recycling industry and the effects of our environment are causes we care deeply about.
We wanted to create a clean, concise and hopeful package for Talon to spread their message and ultimately encourage partners to jump on board this revolutionising mission to change the way we think about plastic.
Pre-Production
First came research; we needed to understand exactly what Talon does day-to-day and what they intend to do in order to better grasp how to deliver that message to audiences. We also researched other documentaries that we wanted to emulate so we could present that to Talon and all be on the same page ahead of the shoot as to what we were wanting to achieve. This research allowed us to identify the key themes of the piece.
- Innovation and Leadership
Explore how Talon emerged as a trailblazer in recycling, surpassing previous limitations and setting new benchmarks for sustainability. - Problem Solving
Highlight Talon’s solution oriented approach, bridging gaps where others faltered, particularly in addressing challenges that stumped competitors. - Product Development and Branding
Uncover the intricacies of Talon’s product development process, from conception to execution, and how they effectively brand their sustainable solutions. - Community Engagement
Examine Talon’s holistic approach, not just in recycling, but also in empowering communities through education on proper waste management practices. - Impact and Future Initiatives
Showcase the tangible impact of Talon’s efforts and provide a glimpse into their upcoming project in Fiji, where they aim to empower locals with recycling knowledge and tools.
We presented Talon with a detailed storyboard of the structure of the documentary, the key points we wanted to address, as well as references for tone and visuals. Once approved, we were able to schedule the day and give Geoff and Sam some talking points for them to better prepare ahead of time.
The last step in our pre-production was to rent out some professional lighting equipment to ensure the interviews were top notch, showcasing our quality filmmaking and to match the elevated type of work they do.
Production
On the day of the shoot, we made sure to focus most of our time on Geoff and Sam’s interviews, as ultimately their story would be the narrative that takes audiences through Talon’s history, purpose and goals. We started off with Sam, who gave us ‘the future’ of our piece. Whereas Geoff’s interview provided us with the history of the company, as well as informed industry experience in waste management.
We were then fortunate enough to have a demonstration of exactly how these materials are broken down, fused and the products they’re ultimately made into. This footage, our B-Roll, gives audiences a visual insight into the planning, work and benefits of everything Talon is about. The shoot was really smooth and our prep in Pre-Production really paid off.
Post-Production
We really wanted to take the time during our editing process to ensure that audiences of all walks of life and knowledge of recycling practices could grasp all that the LPM Project were accomplishing. We assembled our interviews first, and had several trusted people review it, gathering feedback on the messaging - What did they learn? What didn’t they understand? What parts of the interview would be better understood paired with a visual example?
This portion of post-production was really informative, and helped us refine the messaging to a point that is concise yet effective. This allowed us to land on the following structure:
- Introduction to Talon
- Challenges and Solutions
- Behind the Scenes
- Community Empowerment
Once we’d established this narrative, we could then lay in our B-Roll that further enhanced their message and made for an engaging story and exciting adventure for those interested in supporting the LPM Project in future.
Results
We knew that ultimately, Talon would be seeking further financing and exposure through Australian Television networks for their sustainability mission, in order to be able to put their process to the test over in Fiji. We’re proud that Talon have received expressions of interest from National networks through this documentary, and are actively working on expanding this piece, by venturing over to Fiji and truly empowering communities with this knowledge.
The hope is that the team at Spicy Tiger will follow them over there and be a part of this journey, we can’t wait to update you with stage 2 of this important mission.
